Foundress of the Congregation of Sisters Of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Mother Bárbara was born on June 27, 1818, in Vienna, Austria. Being a courageous young woman, full of faith and love for God, and dedicated to God’s people, she did not hesitate for a moment: expelled from her native land because of the present political situation at that time, to travel to Brazil. She arrived in Rio de Janeiro, on November 9, 1848, with 21 other companions, “without money, without knowing anyone, without speaking the language, very hungry, but full of faith in the Lord and the Blessed Mother”.

Her life of complete dedication to God and her neighbor, especially the needy, was marked by much suffering, sickness, poverty, struggles, and apparent failure.

Following the example of Mary, and totally dedicated to God’s will in her life, Bárbara gave her YES to the call which the Lord made to her: on May 8, 1849, she founded the Congregation of Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary---the first Congregation dedicated entirely to pastoral activity in Brazil.

She died on March 17, 1873, leaving FORGIVENESS as her heritage.

Her remains are conserved in the chapel of São Raphael, on: Rua Riachuelo, 508, Porto Alegre, RS ---Brazil.

The diocesan process for her canonization was started in the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre, RS (1993-1996). On July 3, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI promulgated the Decree of Heroic Virtues of Mother Bárbara Maix. We await her Beatification with all our heart.

Hail Mary…
